Lunch

Title: Lunch
Author and Illustrator: Denise Fleming
Publisher and date of Publication: Henry Holt and Company, 1992
Genre: Picture Book, Informative Text
Age Range: K-1st Grade

Summary: This book describes the journey of a cute little mouse trying to find something to eat in the kitchen. His journey starts on the table top and on each page it describes something the mouse ate, then on the next, it tells what it was. In the end, the mouse has a bellyache and on the last page it shows the mouse and his anatomy of what he ate.

Response: I think this book is cute for very young students such as kindergartners or first-graders, maybe even preschool. I had a book a little like this when I was young that was in the shape of a sandwich and told what the boy was eating on each layer of the sandwich. I think young children would love hearing this story and beginner readers would love reading this story. I like the detail on the food on the table. By the way the pictures are drawn, the reader feels like they are apart of this journey. I also like how the food is described on one page and then tells what the food is on the next.

Teaching Ideas: I believe this book would be wonderful to do lessons on. This book could be correlated with Health and Nutrition. Children may draw what they eat when they get hungry or even write and illustrate a story about what the world would look like to be the size of a mouse. Everything must huge! I think it would be easy to read this story aloud to a group and have them guess what food the mouse is eating by the description on the previous page. This book has endless possibilities! Fleming's website has so many great ideas for all of her books. http://www.denisefleming.com/pages/activityindex.htm
