Pumpkin Eye

Title: Pumpkin Eye

Author and Illustrator: Denise Fleming

Publisher and date of publication: Henry Holt and Company, 2001

Genre: Picture Book, Informative Text

Age Range: K-2nd Grade

Summary: This describes the night of Halloween for children and maybe even some adults. With other Denise Fleming picture books, each page rhymes. The book talks about children dressing up as something else and walking through the neighborhood getting candy. By the end of the book it says that "Halloween has reached our street." It leads up to suspense to know what is going to happen next.

Response: I really enjoy reading Denise Fleming picture books and this one is no different! I like that each page rhymes to keep young kids interested and would help them learn how to read this book if they wanted to. I think this book would be wonderful to read to kindergartners right before Halloween because it would get them excited for it. I remember how excited I was when I was in the younger elementary grades when Halloween was coming up. I got to pick something new to be for the night and go out and get candy and eat it when I got back home. The illustrations in this book are blunt and bold but I think that adds to the Halloween setting.

Teaching Ideas: I think this would be gread to read to K-1 classes before Halloween. You could also do activities or projects with this book by having children talk about or write their own story of a Halloween night. Younger children could even draw pictures of halloween things. This book could be be to do all sorts of activities during Halloween.
